Luvvie Ajayi and Jessica Matthews Featured in Netflix Documentary, 'She Did That'

“I’m a fan of nepotism at this point, especially when it comes to black women. One of my hobbies is defending black girls, and two, supporting black women and just black businesses in general because I think we need to prioritize that. If we are going to get on better footing, we actually have to be very focused about that,” said Luvvie Ajayi, New York Times best-selling author.

Outspoken speakers Luvvie Ajayi and Jessica O. Matthews were both featured in the Netflix documentary, She Did That. The documentary delves into the day-to-day of black female entrepreneurs spearheading a brighter future for younger generations.

In honor of Black History Month, we highlight Matthews and Ajayi to note the hard work they endured to be successful in the entrepreneurial industry.

“There are 26 black women who have ever raised $1m for their tech startup. There’s a real missed opportunity in my opinion for women of color, particularly black women, to take lead and solve the problems that we so intimately know,” said Matthews, founder and CEO of Uncharted Power.

The documentary premiered at the 2018 Urbanworld Film Festival. Renae Bluitt, a famous blogger, directed She Did That as “a natural step in her journey as an innate storyteller,” according to The Root. Bluitt believes that collaboration is the new competition in today’s world.

The documentary brings awareness to the trials and tribulations of what it’s like being a black female entrepreneur in a male-dominated working society. It’s not short of showcasing how they each overcame any bias or racism encountered.

Luvvie Ajayi is more than a successful author; she’s also a speaker and digital strategist who emphasizes topics of comedy, technology and activism. Luvvie communicates to her fans through Facebook Watch, social media and a podcast.

Jessica O. Matthews founded her data technology company, Uncharted Power, when she was 22 years old.
