How to Read the Room
/What’s one of the number one social skills everyone strives for? Cultivating the ability to Read the Room--especially during challenging times.
From reading a board room, an in-person or virtual classroom to an afternoon dinner, how well and how quickly you, your staff or partner can take in the mood, biases and tendencies of the other occupants can be the crossing point of using this to achieve personal gain. From getting that important contract, making a new friend, excelling in class to talking about politics, having this skill in your back pocket will benefit you long-term.
Outspoken speaker, social skills expert and best-selling author, Caroline Maguire spoke candidly about her coaching process based on her book, Why Will No One Play With Me, and training methods to help you develop this essential skill.
When speaking about this social skill, Caroline had this to say, “I think this is an incredibly important time in terms of taking the perspective of other people and reading the room for people of all ages. I think that organizations can offer support to their members and I think it's not something everybody is talking about, but everybody is longing for it. It's [reading the room] such an important life skill. If you or someone you know is struggling with it or you feel like your organization is, it's really a good time I think to ask people to work on it because I think everyone is so acutely aware of how important it is right now.”
