Racial Equity Scholar Ruha Benjamin wins 2023 Stowe Prize for Viral Justice

The Harriet Beecher Stowe Center has announced the winner of the 2023 Stowe Prize is Dr. Ruha Benjamin for her critically-acclaimed book, Viral Justice: How We Grow the World We Want (Princeton Press). Her book was selected amongst four other finalists, including fellow Princeton professor, Imani Perry, as an insightful book that ends with a profound sense of hope for the future.

Viral Justice, released in October 2022, “offers a passionate, inspiring, and practical vision of how small changes can add up to large ones, transforming our relationships and communities, and helping us build a more just and joyful world.”

Ruha will receive the award in September at the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center in Hartford, CT. More details to follow. Previous winners include Dr. Clint Smith, Dr. Eddie S. Glaude Jr. (another Princeton colleague), Albert Woodfox, Matthew Desmond, and Bryan Stevenson.

About the Prize:

The Stowe Prize recognizes the author of a distinguished book of general adult fiction or nonfiction whose written work illuminates a critical social justice issue in the tradition of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin. The winning book applies informed inquiry, is accessible and engaging to a wide audience, and promotes empathy and understanding. In creating this award, the Stowe Center recognizes the value of diversity to strengthen our communities.
