How To Make A Multi-Generational Workplace Actually Work

Boomers, Gen X, Xennials, Millennials, Gen Z—what's next? The wars between generations are nothing new to history. Cultural critics have theorized for decades about generational shifts and what they mean for our future. And if you're on social media, no matter your age, the algorithm has likely fed you video skits depicting scenarios that show generational differences in mindsets, norms, and productivity styles in the workplace—some funny, and some downright scathing. So, what gives? How can we, instead, welcome Gen Z, our newest members of the workforce, and instill peace and creativity in the workplace?

It’s impossible to miss these questions in the media. Forbes outlined the depth of Gen Z’s ongoing impact on the workplace here, pointing out disruptions in tech, socially aware company missions, a push for pay equity, a drive for collaboration, a penchant for remote work, and evolving communication.

In her recent newsletter, organizational management expert Mary Abbajay also noted how Gen Z is shaking up the world of work: "This young generation tends to get a bad rap with older ones who characterize them as lazy, entitled, and coddled, and while it’s never fair to paint any generation with a broad brush, the vast majority of this young crowd is flipping that script on its head by paving the way as a group of socially aware, ambitious, collaborative, and entrepreneurial individuals."

And, to that, we say: How could that be so bad? How can we not only welcome change, but elevate our success alongside it?
