Rethinking Innovation and Its Impact

At the core of Ruha’s work is a challenge to how we traditionally view innovation. Too often, progress is celebrated without acknowledging the inequities that come with it. In her research, Ruha highlights how technological advancements—whether in healthcare, policing, education, or finance—can replicate and reinforce patterns of discrimination.

Ruha coined the term "New Jim Code" to describe how modern algorithms and smart systems, which are often seen as neutral and progressive, are embedding racial and gender biases in their design. These algorithms, powered by historical data, perpetuate discriminatory practices under the guise of objectivity. Ruha’s work calls for a radical rethinking of these systems, advocating for innovation that truly serves all members of society.

The Power of Imagination

In her thought-provoking talks and writings, Ruha reminds us that everything we see around us—from policies to technology—was once imagined by someone. As a society, we are living within the constraints of other people’s imaginations, and to move forward, we must collectively expand who has a voice in shaping our future. Ruha emphasizes that "imagination and power go hand in hand," and we must embrace the responsibility of reimagining a more equitable world.

In her book, Imagination: A Manifesto, she further explores how expanding our collective imagination can drive societal transformation. Her approach invites us all to take part in this joyful responsibility, seeking out knowledge and expertise from diverse communities to build systems where everyone can thrive.

A Well-Deserved Honor

Ruha Benjamin’s recognition as a MacArthur Fellow is a testament to the profound impact of her t work examining the social impacts of science and technology. As a renowned scholar and sought-after keynote speaker, she has led conversations about how technology perpetuates inequality and how society can reimagine justice and progress.

The fellowship, which includes $800,000 awarded over five years, will support her ongoing research and advocacy. This honor amplifies her vital voice and commitment to a more equitable world, further empowering her to drive meaningful change.
